I was never one to spend a lot of money on some store bought costumes for my kids. If there were clearance items or sales, I would occasionally purchase those, but usually we just tried to be creative with my fabric stash and by re-purposing past costumes. Every year we would pull out our Halloween box and think about what we could do with what we had and I would make a few new items to please the kids and their big ideas. We came up with some fun ones over the years, so today we are going to give you a few more costume ideas as we talk about past faves on our 38th Friday Faves!
What Was Your Favorite Halloween Costume?
If you look at the photo above, you are looking at my 3 youngest children. That is Maddy being a fairy, Little Jake in the pumpkin costume and 4th grader Alicia dressed as a gypsy! None of those costumes were picked as favorites, but Maddy said that she loved all of her costumes and could hardly choose. She did look pretty cute, didn't she?
Alicia says that her favorite costume was when I made her up to be Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. She was in the 2nd grade. I had sewn a bunch of little coin-like bangles on her skirt and she loved those jingly things. She said that there were a couple of other girls in Esmeralda Costumes, but they were purchased from the store and their coins were printed on. She liked her's better.
You can still purchase that movie on DVD, here.
One year, when Lindsey was very small, I made here a Tinkerbell costume! She looked adorable in it and I think she wore it 2 years in a row, she loved it that much.
The fun thing is that now my granddaughter just told me that she loves Amelia Bedelia books, so I will have to show her this picture of me acting the part.
Here are a few other costumes our family has done:
You will see a lot of posts about last minute costume ideas. I feel like ours were always last minute, but they were pretty fun! What do you remember about costumes you loved? Share them with us in the comments!
Have a Happy Halloween!

Friday Faves is a little late today, but I hope it is worth the wait! Many of you are already experiencing great fall weather, but here in Phoenix we are anxiously awaiting some crisp days for the brief time that we get them. The girls and I have come up with a list of our favorite activities to do in the fall and actually made you a Bucket List that you can print out and post! I posted mine in my changeable kitchen board that I told you about in this post. I figure if I keep it in plain sight, it will remind me to get out and do some of the things I love to do during this season. Sometimes life gets so busy, we forget to stop and take the time to really enjoy it!

My girls all mentioned the pumpkin patch and pumpkin carving. I love sitting by the fire pit, roasting marshmallows and drinking cider. My husband built our pit from bricks in our backyard, but there are many varieties to purchase on Amazon. Like this one:
It is so much fun to sit around the fire on a Fall evening and just talk and enjoy each other's company. It is also a great time to use those Stuff 'em sticks I told you about this past summer on this post!

Have you got the essentials ready for your Halloween Party? Is the food going to be creepy and delicious? But, what are you going to be doing at your extra-ordinary Halloween Party? Maybe you will be just sitting at home with a few friends or family members as you hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters. Watching something creepy together is often a fun way to end the night.
Of course, if you have young ones at home, you don't want to get too scary. For Friday Faves this week, we did a poll of some of our favorite movie aficionado friends, added a few of our own, and came up with a great list of movies for Halloween that has choices for everyone. (All of them are pretty family friendly, depending on the ages of your family members!) The nice thing is that on Amazon you can often rent them or purchase them!
What are your favorite Halloween Movies? (No worse than PG13!)
Great Movies for the Youngest of Kids
All of the age suggestions here are my opinion. You know your own children best, so use your best judgement.
Awesome Movies for Mid-grades and Up:
Movies for More Discriminating Tastes
Ha Ha! I didn't want to say Adult movies or Mature Audiences because those can have bad connotations. But these are movies that younger kids may not get. Or, they may, you be the judge!
Old Classic Movies Sometimes older movies, (like Nosferatu) can be super scary or seem funny when we watch them today. Some were done so well, they are timeless. Here are a few you might like to try if you haven't seen them.
When you start looking around for something to watch, you are going to see so many more films that you may have forgotten all about! I hope these will give you a good start on picking something great to watch on your Halloween! Whether you don't like to be scared at all or if you love to scream throughout the whole thing, let us know what you like, that stays within the PG13 range!

October is the month of many birthdays in our family! All 3 of my daughters were born in October. Then, one of my daughter's-in-law has an October birthday, as well as my sister! That is a lot of cake! Of course, as children my girls each had to have their own, which was tricky because Lindsey and Maddy's birthdays are one day apart. Alicia's birthday is the earliest in the month, coming soon. So, I decided that we should celebrate birthday month by asking everyone today's Friday Fave question:
What is your favorite flavor of birthday cake?
My favorite birthday cake is angel food cake! Homemade of course. Or, a chiffon cake would be nice. I just love the lightness of these cakes and I love how well they go with a little ice cream and don't make me feel too full and heavy. This Orange Chiffon Cake that I posted about on an earlier post would be perfect. Now that I have a Kitchen Aid, making it is so much easier. If you haven't tried this recipe, you must. I am really proud of this one! It has so much orange flavor and is tall, light and delicious.
Maddy surprised me by saying that she loves strawberry flavored cake. Just like one you would make from a cake mix, like this:
I think that my DIL Korina likes this kind as well. Pink is nice for a little girl's birthday party. And, here is a tip:
I figured that Lindsey would choose something pumpkin flavored, and she did! At first she said pumpkin cake. Then she added, "or pumpkin cheese cake". I thought that she would choose the cheese cake because she loves cheese cake. She had cheese cake for her wedding. I don't think we have made a pumpkin cheese cake here on the blog. Maybe I will have to make one for Lindsey's birthday this year and post about it! But, if you can't wait that long, here is a Wisconsinmade one that you can order now! It has 5 stars on Amazon! It looks good!
As I said, Alicia's birthday is coming up first. She chose chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate sprinkles and maybe a raspberry or strawberry filling. This answer surprised me because Alicia doesn't like frosting. But when I questioned it, she said, "I know, but it is the whole birthday experience!" So, even though she doesn't live here in Phoenix, today I made her a birthday cake just to her specifications. Here it is with the recipe.
So, what is your favorite cake for your birthday? Let us know, and if you can't decide, maybe you can choose one of these that we have shared! Happy Birthday!
Here are some great tools to help you be successful when baking these cakes.
