I wrote this post almost 2 years ago, just before my little granddaughter Sofia was born! Since the Autumnal Equinox is on Monday, I thought I would share it again for Fun Friday this week! There are lots of links that you can follow to past craft posts and past recipes. I will link to a few other ones below. I hope you enjoy the memories!
Hello from California! I am with Alicia waiting for her new baby girl to be born! Since today is the first day of Fall, we are all working together on our Friday Fave post for our favorite season. I know that some people feel like Fall is the favorite holiday of too many people, so they want to be different. Or, maybe they don't like pumpkin or pumpkin pie spice. But, around here at 3 Winks, we love the fall for so many reasons. So, today's Friday Fave question is perfect for us:
What is your favorite thing about Fall?
It was funny because when I asked my girls this question, Alicia and Lindsey each gave me an almost identical response. They both said that in the Fall there are a lot of things to celebrate and reasons to get together with family. We have an extra abundance of reasons to get together in our family because all 3 of my daughters and one of my daughters-in-law have birthdays in October. Then, there is Halloween, Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving. As Lindsey put it, Fall signifies the start of the holiday season! You bake yummy food and spend more time with family. In many places, not necessarily in Phoenix, the world changes color and the air is crisp and wonderful! You get to start wearing scarves and gloves.
I was surprised that the first thing that Lindsey mentioned wasn't pumpkins! If you read Renny's Recipes, you know of her love of all things pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. It was heart warming to see that she and Alicia thought of family first! But, Lindsey did mention that in the Fall she can eat pumpkin things without being judged! Maddy also surprised me. I thought that she would mention Halloween first since she loves Halloween. That isn't surprising because her whole childhood she had Halloween themed birthday parties. But, actually the first thing she said that she loves about the season is making Fall crafts. You can see examples of her crafts here and here!
Here is what I love about Fall.
Don't forget to order your molds for Hot Cocoa Bombs here! They are on sale for a good price right now!
Because we love Fall so much, we decided to make a print to celebrate the season and share it with you, our readers! We collected all of the things that we love about the Fall and put them into one beautiful reminder created by Alicia! We hope that you love it!
Welcome Fall! Enjoy the season everyone! Click the photos below for more Fun Friday Ideas! (Or any day really!)

With Labor Day Weekend upon us, it is the perfect time to break out the Fall decorations and perhaps add a few new items to the mix. I love getting into the chest where my Fall items are stored and finding things I didn't remember that I owned! But, I also love going into the stores and seeing new ideas and getting inspiration there. Maddy and I went on a little Fall shopping spree and we came back with some great stuff that is pretty inexpensive! First of all, look at the adorable Thankful Chalk board that Maddy decorated. We found the plaque at Michael's for about $2.50. Maddy had a great idea to turn it into a chalkboard that family members can write things that they are thankful for everyday or every week throughout the season, whatever your pleasure. Of course, I already owned the chalkboard paint. I painted the base coat and did a thin wash of brown acrylic paint around the frame. Then I was nervous about writing "thankful," so I made Maddy do it! Ha ha! Look how cute it came out! She always thinks of the cute details like the little leaves and dots. She did it all with one chalk marker! Free hand! I would have written thankful and left it at that! Here are a few close-ups: Michael's had a lot of their Fall decor on sale for 40% off or more. This weekend would be a great time to check it out before it is all gone! Another great place we found to shop was at Dollar Tree! We found so many things to craft with and decorate with that we can't wait to show you some of our creations in up coming posts! In the meantime, here are some of the things you are going to love! (But I'm not going to tell you all of our secrets yet! Use your imagination and see what you come up with!)
My goodness you guys! There is so much fun stuff that I can't even list it all! You have to click the links and see for yourself! , The Banana Split was created back in the early 1900's by a soda fountain worker in a Pharmacy in Pennsylvania. I'll be that young worker had no idea that it would still be a thing that people associate with decadent ice cream treats even today, in the 21st century. Nor could he have known that there would be an actual day to celebrate this delicious concoction! Thank you David Stickler for your creativity!
A banana split seems like a perfect way to have some fun this weekend, especially in the boiling hot weather that we have been having here in Phoenix. Originally, since I was have a few of my grandchildren over, I thought I would try to find some banana split bowls. You know, the oblong shaped ones that will accommodate the long banana. But, I had no luck with the stores that I went to. Then, I found this overly large one at Dollar Tree, and I thought to myself that sharing a big banana split would be even more fun! Besides, since my grandchildren are very small, I figured it was better to get them small, cute cups for ice cream and my husband and I could share the big banana split together! It worked out perfectly. As a matter of fact, you could have more than 2 people sharing out of this bowl!
Today it seems like people might put any flavor or ice cream and toppings on top of a banana and call it a banana split. But, there really is a traditionally "correct" way to build one. Watch the slide show as I show you how we built ours! Don't forget that a really good ice cream scoop is a wonder to use. I love mine from Pampered Chef.
Even if the kids don't want an entire banana split, (mine didn't), they loved choosing their ice cream and toppings! Maybe you would rather go less traditional and come up with your own version of this classic treat. What flavors do you love putting together? There are sure a lot more choices than there were when the banana split was invented! How ever you do it, enjoy banana split day this weekend!
Look! I found these cute banana split bowls on Amazon!

Back in the mid-70s, Jello put out a dessert kit that my dad just loved. It was called Spoon Candy. It was pudding treat in candy flavors, like peanut butter cup, that had a chocolate topping that hardened like the outer chocolate of a candy bar. Unfortunately, after about 3 years this delectable dessert was taken off the market for some unknown reason. I guess not everyone liked it as much as my dad did. (Well, the rest of our family liked it, too.)
Fast forward to this decade and an ice cream topping called Magic Shell is sold in grocery stores. It has the magical ability to pour as a liquid out of the bottle and then harden quickly when it gets cold. There are versions of this product put out by Smucker's and by Hershey. As soon as I became acquainted with this stuff I flashed back to Spoon Candy. I thought to myself, "Surely I can remake that magical, retro dessert."
I found the recipe for peanut butter pudding on tasteofhome.com. Then, I wanted to make a vegan version, so I substituted coconut milk and coconut cream for the milk and cream in the recipe. Maddy loved it! It did have a little hint of coconut flavor mixed with the peanut butter flavor, which was not a bad thing at all. When the pudding is slightly cooled and setting, pour Magic Shell on the top and cool the rest of the way. Hershey even has a Reese's Peanut Butter flavor shell which made this dessert even better!
After the peanut butter experiment was a success, it started to be fun to come up with more flavors and add ins that would give the delicious Spoon Candy experience. I thought, this would be a fun family activity! Have some flavors of pudding available and various add ins and see who can come up with the most creative combinations. Here are some of the ideas that we have tried:
I've also thought of :
I prefer cooked puddings. But, if you use instant, like we did for some flavors, don't use soy or almond milk in instant pudding or it won't set. Coconut milk works great!
I must confess that this version is not exactly the way I remember Spoon Candy to be, but it is pretty good. Besides, that was 40 years ago, so my memory is probably fading! This is still a great way to have some fun and deliciousness on a weekend! Happy Fun Friday!
PS: The Smucker's Magic Shell comes in lots of flavors!
