On the the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… 2 Turtle doves, which inspired this Turtle Dipped Pretzels recipe! If you've never heard of turtles before (the candy, that is) they are typically pecans coated in caramel and chocolate. This is my take on them. These are a quick, easy, and delicious snack to make for the holiday season (or any season, really). They’re also vegan and gluten free, so they’re great for sharing! Keep reading to the end for my tips on making them. My Tips for Making These

You may have been seeing a lot of references to the 12 Days of Christmas this time of year. I know that I have. These references generally are a 12 day countdown without reference to the actual lyrics of the classic Christmas Carol.
You may or may not know that the 12 days of Christmas actually begins on Christmas Day and runs through Jan 6, or Three Kings Day. The Shakespeare play, 12th Night, is based on the revelry associated with the celebration of the last day of the 12 days of Christmas. While traditionally Christians have thought that the Wise Men came 12 days after the birth of Christ, it probably took them much longer than that to get there. The lyrics to the song are actually very symbolic! The reference to "My True Love" actually refers to Jesus Christ. The symbol of the partridge comes from the idea that the partridge is a bird that will sacrifice itself to save its children. For more information about all of the symbols, you can read this article, which I found fascinating!
Anywho, here at 3 Winks, we decided that it would be really fun to come up with a recipe for each verse of the song, The 12 Days of Christmas! We looked at the actual lyrics and decided what we could bake or cook or whip up to match the lyrics of that day! We are writing this before Christmas, so that if you want to celebrate the actual 12 Days, you will have the recipes in advance!
I took the assignment of The First Day of Christmas, obviously! When we discussed A Partridge in a Pear Tree, Lindsey suggested Poire Belle Helene because "poire" is the French word for "pear", and I am Helen. (The French version of my name should have accents aigue and grave over the first 2 "e"s but I don't know how to put them there on a English speaking keyboard.) Anyway, we decided that this was a beautiful and simple dessert that would be perfect for the first day of Christmas!
This poached pear dish was created in 1864 by Auguste Escoffier in honor of the opera La Belle Helene. There are various methods with different flavors added to the liquid in which the pears are poached. This recipe uses cinnamon and cloves in a sugar syrup. Then, the pears are topped with a rich chocolate sauce and served with ice cream on the side. Very fancy! I used my delicious Hot Fudge Sauce that I have given you the recipe for on this post. When I went to serve this beautiful dessert, I found that I was out of vanilla ice cream! So, what you are seeing in the photo is Spumoni! Very holiday-ish! It was so good!
I hope that you give this simple yet elegant recipe a try! Be sure to come back tomorrow for The 2nd Day of Christmas! If you don't want to poach pears, canned might make a simple alternative.

If you know me at all, you know that Christmas just isn't Christmas unless I craft something to give each year. Ornaments are a quick and easy go to and I love to create them because they are like a second gift to add to a package, or they make a quick little gift for a friend. When I spotted these Sesame Street Figures at Dollar Tree a while ago, I knew that they would make great Christmas Ornaments for 3 little granddaughters that I know and love!
Here is how I made these ornaments one at a time. Most of the supplies, I had on hand. A lot of them were probably purchased at Dollar Tree! For all of the ornaments, you will need a glue gun and glue.
Elmo
Elmo is such a popular character. Since he loves music, I decided that he would love a bell! I think my little Amelia will love him on her package this year!
For Elmo you will need:
Cookie Monster
We all love Cookie Monster! We have a stuffed toy Cookie Monster that talks that we have had since Madalynn was a baby! Emily has played with him at my house quite a bit, so I know she will love receiving this ornament. Of course, Cookie Monster must have a Christmas cookie!
You will need:
Grover
We all think that Grover is pretty funny and special. We feel like he should get more attention on Sesame Street! Who doesn't love his famous book, The Monster at the End of This Book? If you don't have it, it would make a great gift this Christmas! Alicia is really going to appreciate Sofia receiving this ornament featuring Grover bringing the Christmas Tree!
Here is what you will need:
I may have to get more of these figures. I kind of think Oscar would be really fun to make look festive. What would you do to jazz him up?
If you enjoyed these ornaments, you may love the following!
Don't forget that we are celebrating Christmas by doing Blogmas, or in other words we are posting new Christmas themed posts everyday (except for 2) until Christmas! Don't miss these that have already happened:

Thank you for your support. This post was originally posted in Dec 2016 and we're resharing it because it's the perfect drink to bring joy to your 2020 winter. It is Lindsey once again. My mom asked me to blog about Hot Orange Punch, another Christmas tradition in our home. Every year around Christmas time my mom would make things like eggnog (without the alcohol, because, you know, we're Mormon), hot chocolate, and Hot Orange Punch. She says that she remembers her mom making it when she was a little girl, so it is a long standing tradition. When I was in college I asked my mom for the recipe and I started making it. I'd make it when I was sick and started making it for my roommates to enjoy. Many of them stated that it is wassail, but I've had wassail, and Hot Orange Punch tastes better. The wassail I had was pretty watered down anyhow. Anyway, there is no apple juice in this. Besides Hot Orange Punch being warm and delicious and full of Vitamin C, it is also REALLY easy to make. So, let me tell you how! Enjoy! I am enjoying mine while watching the LDS church's First Presidency Christmas Devotional. If you are looking for more ways to have a Christ centered Christmas you can watch a broadcast of it at lds.org or mormon.org or find it on Youtube on the Mormon.org channel. |
