Since Alicia just introduced our new Wednesday feature, What to Read Wednesday this week, and because we have a podcast called Cover to Reel, and because the Newbery Awards for 2019 were just announced about 4 days ago, it seemed appropriate to talk about some of our favorite Newbery Award winning books on today's Friday Faves. The Newbery Award is given annually to the children's book author who has made the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for children. It has been awarded each year since 1922. There is generally one author that receives the top award and then a few other books that are given a Newbery Honor award as well. Throughout your school life or your children's school life, you have probably been exposed to many of the Newbery Award Winners. I haven't read any of this year's winners yet, but this year, the top award went to (insert drum roll)...... Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina- It is the story of a 6th grade girl who has to deal with the problems of changes in school and in family. It deals with subjects of jealousy and alzheimers with wisdom and humor and comes highly recommended. The 2 honor winners for this year are: The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani - This story takes place in India in 1947, writtten in diary form by a young girl to her mother. The Book of Boy by Catherine Gilbert Murdock-This is the story of a boy with a lump on his back who goes on a mysterious pilgrimage in 1350, hoping to see if he can be healed. I am always amazed at the deep subjects that are dealt with in some of the children's literature today, especially among these award winning books. But, the subjects are usually dealt with in beautiful, understandable ways. You can go on the website of the Association For Library Service for Children (alsc) to find the complete lists of Newbery Winners, as well as Caldecott and other awards listed to find excellent books to read. We thought that today we would share a few of our favorites with you that we have enjoyed over the years. We may have already covered them with their movie counterparts on Cover to Reel, or they may be in the works for later! I am going to start from the oldest and work my way to the most recent.
There were some books that I've read that I just didn't feel I had the room to include, but it was hard to leave any out! That is why this list is so long! But, If you have some favorite Newbery Award Winners that I didn't include, please be sure to drop the titles in the comments section. Even though these are supposed to children's books, I have enjoyed so many of them as an adult.
We will let you know if we include any of the Cover to Reel versions on the podcast! But, this week, be sure to tune in to hear Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, just produced yesterday!

Today for Friday Faves, we are getting you ready for January 27, which is Chocolate Cake Day! Not that we need a day to decide to bake and eat chocolate cake, but here is a great excuse! We've shared a number of chocolate cakes here on the blog, but besides those, today I have gathered some favorites from some of our blogger friends to share with you as well! You can just click on the links to their blogs to find the recipes or to the posts that we have shared before. But, hurry, you only have 2 days to choose which cake (or 2) you will bake! (After all, it is a holiday!)
What is your favorite Chocolate Cake?
I had almost forgotten about this cake that I developed for Alicia and shared in this post about our favorite birthday cakes! I need to revisit it and make it again!
I love the beauty and the story behind this cake from Shelley Webb, internationalcaregiver.com
She made this cake herself for her wedding in 1983. Actually, she made 14 of them! I can hardly wait to make this recipe! Look at how rich it looks:
This Swiss Cake Roll originally posted for a Valentine's Day dessert. So, if you don't make it for Chocolate Cake Day, keep it in your back pocket for Valentine's Day. Actually, any of these cakes would be perfect for Valentine's Day!
I love a good Texas Sheet Cake and this one from Blogging Grandma Candy Cage at Candy's Farm House Pantry looks just like a Texas Sheet Cake should. It would be perfect for a large family gathering on Chocolate Cake Day.
Shared by Pam Marston at Natural Essentials at Yellow Banks shared this iconic recipe. The marshmallow cream makes this cake decadent.
Maddy was so happy when I shared this Vegan Chocolate Cake that is moist and decadent. The eggs and any other animal products are truly not missed!
The wonderful thing about baking with zucchini is the moisture it adds to the recipe, not to mention it makes you feel like your cake is really healthy so you can eat an extra piece! Thanks to Nancy on the Home Front for this great recipe!
Last but not least we couldn't share a list of great chocolate cakes without sharing this Perfect Chocolate Cake. It is so dense, moist and chocolaty! The perfect cake for Chocolate Cake Day!
Plus 1 update!!!
After going live with this post, Alicia reminded me that I had left out the Black Forest Cake! I couldn't do that! This decadent Chocolate-Cherry Cake is perfect for a chocolate cake celebration! It also reminds me of my days in Germany!
There you have it, 9 choices instead of 8!
Now, how do I choose which one to make? Which one do you think you would like the best? I'll let you know on Instagram and Facebook later. In the meantime, make your cake, and eat it too!

We have mentioned before that we are a game playing, competitive family! When we get together for the holidays, the games come out and we have so much fun. Sometimes, when we don't feel like gathering around a card table or sitting on hard chairs, we all lounge on the couch and play trivia games. We don't necessarily play by the rules, but we ask the questions and crack ourselves up trying to come up with the correct, or if not correct, then the funniest answers. These types of games are a great way to get to know one another a little better, so we thought that today, at the start of this new year, we would let you get to know us better by answering a few of these trivia questions from a couple of our favorite games. That's why we call today's Friday Faves Trivia Truths!
We have taken today's questions from two of our favorite trivia games. They have a lot of fun questions and incite a lot of laughter. The games are The Game of Things and Loaded Questions.
Question #1: In an emergency situation, what would be your strength?
Alicia-her efficiency Helen-her preparedness skills Lindsey-her level headedness Maddy-she stays calm under pressure.
Question #2: What compliment embarrasses you the most?
Helen-all compliments Lindsey-"You look like you've lost weight!" Does that mean you thought I looked fat before? Alicia-"You have curly hair!" Is that a compliment? Maddy-she says all compliments as well because she doesn't like being the center of attention.
Question #3: Things that taste better than chocolate? Oh come on now!
Lindsey-Maybe Pumpkin Cheesecake with a Chocolate Drizzle? Alicia-Sushi? Helen-Salmon? Maddy-Peanut Butter and Chocolate!
Question #4: What would you like to test for a living?
Maddy and Alicia both say-Mattresses. They would nap on any of them. Helen-My niece Amanda tests ice cream for Haagen-Dazs and I would like her job, except I am not a microbiologist. Lindsey-She already tests people's ability to obey the law.
Question #5: What is the 1 thing that is preventing you from being the greatest person in the history of the world?
Lindsey-My student loans. Helen-My natural klutziness. Maddy-I'm not tall enough! (?) Alicia-I'm to lazy.
How would you answer those questions? Give us your answers in the comments!
Another game that is super easy to play while lounging on the couch is Scattergories! We've been enjoying this one a lot this season. Finally, I was given a game that does require sitting around the game table, but it is so much fun, it is worth getting off the couch! It is called Cover Your Assets! I have failed to win at it yet, but it is so much fun. I love this description of the game, "Whooping, hollering, contagious laughter, and gloating are possible side effects of this game."

Reading Christmas books with your kids is a wonderful past time this time of year. Many of these adorable books help kids to understand the meaning of Christmas and feelings present at this time of year. I always enjoyed adding something new to our family Christmas library each year and I love sharing our books with my grandchildren now. If you haven't added any new additions to your collection yet this year, We have some selections for you to check out. Many of them are still available on Amazon Prime, ready to be delivered today or tomorrow. Or, you can get them on Kindle.
Many of my grandchildren LOVE Daniel Tiger! I love the lessons taught on the TV show. This Christmas board book is sure to please!
I was introduced to The Little Blue Truck when my grandson Adrian was born. There is always a sweet message in these books. This one is a board book with twinkly lights!
Another board book! This one is a sweet rhyming book that tells the animals roles in the birth of the Baby Jesus.
Cool Pete the Cat teaches that having the Christmas Spirit is groovy!
When I was a kid, it always seemed sad to me that hibernating animals missed Christmas! Ha Ha! This story addresses what would happen when a Bear Stays Up for Christmas!
This is the story of how a tiny mouse's actions affect many! It has a 5 star rating!
The humor and word play in this book have made it a family favorite for years!
This is a story of friendship with beautiful illustrations! It is the one my husband is reading to my grandchildren in the photo!
The Christmas Wish was on the New York Time's best seller list. Beautifully written and illustrated, it reminds me of a Jan Brett story. It is about a little girl who wants to be one of Santa's elves and what she does about it.
Speaking of Jan Brett, one of my favorite children's authors, here is a treasury that will be a wonderful addition to any Christmas collection. It is a great price for a collection of 7 of her most beloved stories.
If you love LIttle Women the way we do, here is a picture book that takes a sweet moment from that novel just to help you celebrate Christmas. If you have a child just about old enough to read the novel, this picture book would be a nice introduction to it. (And, the novel would be a great Christmas gift!)
Similarly, there are a number of special Christmas picture books pulled from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books. The simple joys of the holidays in those early settler times are heart warming.
Finally, this story, The Littlest Angel has been around for a long time. I grew up with it and we have owned a copy for a long time. But, just recently I was reintroduced to it by a wonderful storyteller who brought new meaning to the story for me in the beautiful way that she told it. The message in the book is so sweet. I began searching Amazon after hearing the telling of the story again after all of these years so that I could give it to my grandchildren and I learned that it is out of print! But, there are copies available, but they are pretty pricey! The investment is well worth it though for the beauty of this story. You won't find stories like this one written today.
I hope you will look for some quiet moments to sit and enjoy some reading time and to feel the magic this year that reading a Christmas story can bring.
And here are a few awesome last minute reading gifts:
