Today's Friday Fave post came about because of a few things:
Of course, the best part of the fortune cookie is the fortune! I asked my girls for fortunes that they would like to see, and I got a couple of good ones from them. Also, the kit comes with over 100 fortunes, and some are pretty good, depending on the type you want, serious, romantic, funny, etc.
The recipe for fortune cookies is very simple. Be prepared to have burnt fingertips as you shape the cookies.
Depending on your oven, you may have to play with the time and temperature for your cookies. Some of my cookies ended up nice and crispy with that nice snap. But some were a little too soft. So, it is trial and error I guess.
Of course, if you don't want to make your own cookies, but want the personalized fortunes, you can purchase them and pull out the fortunes carefully and add your own. Happy Confucius Day! And be sure to check out the podcast! It is extra good because my son-in-law is partnering with Alicia this week and they do a great job together!

Of course, soup is also a favorite meal for Fall. But, we posted about those on a previous post. If you missed it, check it out here!
Happy Fall!
I was reading something the other day that mentioned that September is Better Breakfast Month. This made me very happy because I love breakfast. If you look on the sidebar and see that we have a category for Breakfast, go ahead and click on it. You will find that there are many posts there about breakfast, otherwise known as the most important meal of the day.
Today, for Friday Faves, we are going to run with this breakfast topic. But, I decided I needed to clarify something with my girls. I asked them, do they mean better tasting breakfast, or better for you. They answered "Both"! So, today there will be two categories for Better Breakfasts: Just Delicious and Good For You + Delicious!
Let's start with Good For You + Delicious:
When it comes to healthy breakfasts, I really do like oatmeal during the winter months. But, I see a lot of recipes lately for overnight oats that you can just grab and eat in the morning. The idea of cold oatmeal, not cooked, just does not sound appetizing to me. I like it hot with brown sugar or honey.
Just Delicious:
If you get the chance to sit down and have breakfast with your family a few times this month, I hope our Breakfast Category will give you some fun ideas. I forgot to mention Root Beer Pancakes! That one is fun and easy! I have a lot of memories centered around breakfast with my family. I think it is a shame that in this fast paced world, hardly anyone sits around the table and eats breakfast together anymore. Most school children are eating at school instead of at home with their families. I am not sure that those are "Better Breakfasts." I think that what truly makes a better breakfast is the time around the table with family, eating something delicious yet still healthy, spending time connecting as the day begins and sending our children out for the day with an encouraging, loving word. I know that it is hard with jobs and busy lives, but maybe even just on a Saturday morning we can keep this tradition alive!
Here is how I like to cook breakfast!

Wow! I can't believe that we have already hit Friday Faves #72! It is kind of cool to like so many things! But, honestly, before today, I can't say that I have always been a big fan of trail mix. I saw on my calendar of unusual holidays that today is National Trail Mix Day. When I saw that, I thought ugh! What is there to say about that? To me, the best part of trail mix is the M&Ms! It always bugs me that when you get to the bottom of the bag of trail mix, all that is left are some crumbs of cereal and nuts. So, I got to thinking, what if I make a personalized trail mix that I will really love? And no, it can't be just the bag of M&Ms. It has to have other healthy stuff in it as well. Well, I began to poll my family to find out what their favorite ingredients are in trail mix and then I made our own personalized recipe for it! I will share it with you later in this post! Then, if our faves are your faves you can just use my recipe. If not, you can take your own poll make your own personalized trail mix recipe.
After you make the mix, it is nice to package it up to either take hiking or to give away, or just to keep it fresh for snacking. It won't last long. Maddy and I have been munching on it all day. That serves 12 thing is just a guideline. But, here are some ways to package it before you eat it all.
So, Happy National Trail Mix Day! That is our personalized mix. What would yours look like? Let us know your favorite ingredients!
