I was raised in a cowboy town. Clovis, CA was a great place to grow up. The schools were (and as far as I know still are), some of the best in the state. It had a tradition of conservative, good values, agriculture and yes, cowboys! Every year in April we celebrated Rodeo Days. That Friday at school, we could dress up in western garb. On Saturday, there was the Rodeo Day parades. The high school band and the bands from neighboring Fresno marched in it. There were floats and Shriner clowns and lots and lots of horses. Then, Saturday through Sunday was the Clovis Rodeo. I grew up there in the 1960s-1970s, but the traditions carry on today. The Rodeo in 2018 was the 104th Clovis Rodeo! I lived out in the country, but I was never a part of the cowboy culture. I've only ridden a horse a handful of times and as a child, my one claim to fame was being bucked from a donkey as my brother and I rode it down our driveway. But, I sure loved the cowboy traditions that surrounded me and I was proud to be a part of a town that was rich in tradition.
My husband has better cowboy roots than I do. His great uncle was Billy Bonnell, a fairly famous rodeo cowboy!
I am giving you all of this information because today is actually National Cowboy Day! Having been raised with the traditions and stories and movies that romanticized the American Cowboy, we thought we would join in the celebration today. For Friday Faves, we are sharing some of our favorite cowboy themed things!
Movies
My husband isn't a cowboy, but he loves westerns! I have to admit, I am pretty fond of old westerns movies myself. Here are some of our faves:
Music
I actually have a couple of sons who grew up loving hard rock music who have converted to Country Western.
Other Cowboy Finds
So, that is our nod to our cowboy heritage! Do we have any cowboy or girl readers out there? Or, were any of your ancestors cowboys? That family history is fascinating to learn about! We would love to hear from you.
Enjoy your weekend!

Last week, when I didn't post Friday Faves, my plan had been to celebrate Bastille Day which is always on the 14th of July. I guess it is just as well that I ran out of time because it was hard to limit our love of French culture and products to just a few things. After all, we all studied French, my husband served a french speaking mission in Tahiti, Lindsey served one in France, plus did a semester of law school there, My son Jacob is currently serving a french speaking mission in the Ivory Coast! That is a lot of french influence in our lives! The language is beautiful, the country has so much rich history, the cuisine is amazing, France has been the center of fashion for ages, there is just so much to enjoy.
So, Instead of trying to get everyone to focus on a favorite, I decided that this week I would share a french dish that I learned from Panna Cooking for a delicious Brown Butter Tart to give a nod to a favorite place of ours, France.
This tart recipe is currently being offered for free on Panna. If you love watching cooking shows like I do, you know that it can be frustrating to try to reproduce the recipes you see on TV and get a good result. The videos on Panna and step by step written instructions make it so easy to follow and make their recipes yourself. Blueberries have been priced fairly reasonably lately, so when I saw this Browned Butter Tart with Berries, I knew I had to give this recipe a try. You can click on the link and give it a try as well. The chef that teaches this class is Nancy Silverton. I am referring you to her class for this recipe, but I will share some of the tips she gave and some adaptations that I made for my purposes.
At first I thought that this recipe was going to be too much for me to do as I babysat my granddaughter, but as it turned out, each step was fairly quick to do and then it would have to chill awhile. When the baby went down for her nap, I could do the next step or I would put her in her high chair to watch me for a bit. It was a breeze! Then, one of the best things about this recipe is that it makes enough crust and custard for 2 tarts and the extra dough and custard keeps in the fridge for a good amount of time. In the middle of the week, I made the blueberry tart, and then on the weekend, I made a peach tart! The peach one was super fast to do since the dough and custard were already made.
My Take-Aways From Nancy Silverton:
A Couple of Adaptations:
If you try this recipe, let me know how yours turns out!

We just put up our 2nd episode of our podcast! This is a new pursuit that we are having so much fun with! If you haven't given the podcast a listen yet, please do and let us know what you think! As you can tell from the name, Cover to Reel, our podcast deals with books that have been made into movies. So far, we have covered Jurassic Park and The Wizard of OZ. In honor of the launch of our podcast, we decided to use Friday Faves today to showcase some of our favorite books to movies and to give you a preview of some of the books we hope to cover in the future.
Harry Potter, all book volumes and all movies: We all love this series! We hope to cover each book and accompanying movie(s) one by one.
The Lord of the Rings, all book volumes (that set includes The Hobbit) and all movies: I love the books and the movies! You can tell that we really love fantasy by these first two choices. And of course, there is Legolas. Enough said! The Hobbit, the book and all 3 movies: I read this book in grade school and have reread it many times. It is no surprise to me that they took 3 movies to tell the entire story! Narnia, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe: Read the entire Chronicles, but I would focus on The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when it comes to the movies. A Wrinkle in Time, the movie is fairly new, finally after reading the book in elementary school! The Hunger Games, this one is going to be a fun discussion because the books and the movies were so excellent! To Kill a Mockingbird: The movie is such a classic so well acted by Gregory Peck. The book is rich and wonderful with a beautiful back story of the author's. Last but not least, Shrek: Lindsey and Alicia just recorded this one for the podcast. The book is a simple child's book, but the movies takes it so much farther! Stay tuned for the podcast about this book/movie combo!
So, those are our faves for this Friday! Hopefully they will help you find some entertainment for the weekend. Read a book and then watch the movie so you can join in the conversation withCover To Reel!

Today is officially "Waffle Iron Day." But, who can talk about waffle irons without talking about waffles? I mean, that little crispness on the outside and the fluffy goodness on the inside, all topped with your favorite toppings of fruit, syrup, butter, ice cream and myriads of other topping ideas. And, the nice thing about waffles is the way they hold the syrup on every bite!
For Christmas, Maddy received this adorable Mickey Mouse Waffle Iron! The perfect gift for a Disney lover! Since we are planning a family reunion in Disneyland, she is planning to bake everyone Mickey waffles to keep that Disney theme going!
Of course, she has tried it out on her nieces and nephews already and made them this delicious vegan waffle recipe! These really are so good! And vegan! Who knew?
When my husband and I were first married, we received a stove top Belgium Waffle Iron (similar to this one) than we used for years. Finally one year, Lindsey bought me an electric one (similar here) that I have used ever since. I don't even know what I have done with my stove top one, which is kind of sad because it did make really thick and fluffy Belgium Waffles! But, my electric one does a great job as well (and is quicker and easier).
Of course, I love lots of fun toppings! Here is what I made to show you on this post, blueberries and whipped cream! Yum! All on top of a great and super simple waffle recipe.
Lindsey loves pumpkin pie spice everything, so her fave choice was a no brainer! And, Alicia reminds us that you don't always have to go super sweet with waffles, she loves chicken and waffles! If you are in the mood for waffles now, or at least some pancakes, you may be interested in some of our past posts!
How do you like your waffles? Maybe this weekend will be a great time to enjoy them.
